These days, the internet is inundated with ‘smart appliance’ news and unveilings. If you’re familiar with CES, then you’ve probably seen at least a dozen of these smart appliances on display. In fact, CES has become the ‘unofficial’ battleground for smart appliance manufacturers.
This is one of the best places for us consumers to understand what our ‘smart dollars’ could buy.
As a smart appliance owner myself, I can tell you — my life has become a lot simpler. I like to do things in a hurry, but not so much of a hurry that the quality of what I’m doing is compromised. Smart appliances allow me to ‘set and forget’ so that I can push my attention towards more important tasks. Anyway, before I start rambling, I’d like to let you in on my experience owning smart appliances.
Smart Ranges that Know What’s Cooking
Smart ranges vary greatly by both features and ease-of-use. Every smart range manufacturer wants you to know that they understand what we want in general — but it’s up to you to find the product you like and what best suits your needs. I have a smart oven and I think the coolest feature is Smart Preheat.
When I want to cook, I’m the kind of person that wants to do it at the moment I think about it. I love quiches and I love baked goods, but on those cold blustery mornings (like the one we’re having today), I just can’t manage to get up and preheat the oven. So, while I’m snuggled away in my warm bed, I turn on my Galaxy Note 3 and connect to my oven. Then in seconds, my oven is preheated and I have all the time in the world to wince and whimper over getting up. Now, if they could just include a feature that cracks eggs, seasons them, and pours them in the pie dish for me– I’d be super happy! But aside from my wishful thinking….
Another cool feature that I can’t do without is the Predictive Cooking function. If you cook for a lot of people, this function can save you future embarrassments. If you’ve ever undercooked a Thanksgiving turkey, then you know exactly what I mean. To work this feature, I enter the weight of my Turkey and it automatically knows what temperature to cook it on and for how long. It also auto-adjusts the temperature, so it’s perfect and juicy every time. No basting necessary!
My Smart Washer Let’s Me Take a Load Off
When I first saw a smart washer and dryer combo I thought, “This is just a shined up version of a regular washer and dryer.” But since I was standing amongst hundreds of tech-lovers, I thought it would be best to keep my thoughts to myself. Not willing to be the odd man out, I played around with the features and I have to say, I was really impressed. Particularly, with the feature that let’s you know how dry something is. It’s called a moisture sensor. The moisture sensor gauges the clothes’ dampness. If it feels the cycle you set it to won’t dry the clothes adequately, it overrides the cycle. What I also found useful was the feature that allows you to set an auto timer. This auto timer will automatically start your clothes. This is just great! Once again, I’m not a morning person, so anything that can automate the majority of my daily tasks is just fine by me.
I used to watch Little LuLu as a kid and dream of machines swooping down and brushing my teeth, dressing me and combing my hair — even cooking and feeding me breakfast. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting pretty close. I hate to say that I’m lazy, because I really love working and having fun, but monotonous everyday tasks can really dull up my day. In my opinion, these smart appliances help me to avoid the dullness.
